National Dance Week Kick-Off

At noon on Monday, April 24, the best of American dance will be showcased in a free, hour-long performance to kick off National Dance Week. The event will take place outdoors on Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza, and will be hosted by Broadway and Hollywood star Sandy Duncan. Debbie Allen, National Dance Week’s celebrity spokesperson, may also make an appearance.

The event will include highlights from the Broadway productions of , as well as performances by The Parsons Dance Company, Damian Woetzel, Doug Varone & Dancers, the cast members of A Few Good Men…Dancin’, Ballet Hispanico (featuring Pedro Ruiz & Allesandra Corona), Pilobolus, and the Studio of the Year (SOY) winner of Dancers Responding to Aids’ (DRA) year-long student fundraising competition.

This year’s SOY winner is Maggie Frawley’s Dance School, from Towanda Pennsylvania, a town of 5,000 people. Using the slogan “the little town that cared”, the studio raised over $4,000.

DRA, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, distributes funds to needy dancers who are living with HIV/AIDs.
