The piece centers on the bond between a young man and his horse, Joey, and the events that happen after Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the onset of World War I.

The Broadway production of the piece, playing at Lincoln Center Theater, has been nominated for Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Set Design for a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play. In addition, Handspring Puppet Company has received a Special Tony Award for their integral puppet design for the production.
