Producers Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment have announced plans to launch a North American tour of the Tony Award-nominated musical Sister Act at Toronto's Canon Theatre in the fall of 2012. Additional cities, dates and casting will be announced at a later date.

The musical, which is based on the film of the same name, tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva put into protective custody in a convent after she runs away from her gangster boyfriend.

The show features an original score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane. Directed on Broadway by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, the production features choreography by Anthony Van Laast.

Sister Act received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical, along with nominations for actresses Patina Miller and Victoria Clark.
