Synopsis

The Unofficial New York Yale Cabaret, a new theatre company made up of graduates of the Yale School of Drama, whose first production, Most Happy was hailed by TalkinBroadway.com as "playing beautifully, playing powerfully, and playing profoundly," presents the US premiere of Three Children, by Puay Tin Leow, widely regarded as one of Malaysia's foremost playwrights.

Three Children has been performed around the world in Europe, Australia and throughout Asia. This haunting, mystical play deals with timely issues of displacement and identity as three Chinese immigrants journey back to a childhood growing up within the harrowing world of post-colonial Malaysia where baby girls are sold for five dollars each and where lost souls roam the earth.

This new production, directed by Yale School of Drama graduate Alec Tok, features live chinese drumming and a multi-cultural cast that includes Rob Lok (the first Chinese-American clown to tour with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus), Charlotta Mohlin (a Swedish soap opera star who has previously worked with director Richard Foreman in The Gods are pounding my head and with Alan Cumming in the upcoming feature Sweet Land), and fellow Yale alumni Tijuana Ricks (who has appeared on Law and Order, Law and Order:SVU, All My Children, and will be featured in the upcoming film All Fall Down starring Anthony LaPaglia and Isabella Rosellini.

"The play's unique sound and haunting beauty won't allow recollections of it to escape your mind for a good while to come!" -- Matthew Murray, TalkinBroadway.com

Doors open at 6:30 pm for food and drink (no minimums).

Singapore-based Substation Magazine, calls Puay Tin Leow's works "some of the most significant and enduring Singaporean/Malaysian plays to date." The Standard Chartered International Literary Festival in Hong Kong described her plays as reflecting "a deep rooted South East Asian sensibility, experimenting with chance, shifting voices and viewpoints, storytelling, songs and chants."

The Unofficial New York Yale Cabaret (UNYYC) is a new seasonal theatre company that provides an artistic home for Yale School of Drama graduates and their collaborators. UNYYC presents a different theatrical project every month, presented in a fun environment serving food and drink, all with the aim of showcasing rising talent to the New York community. As the New York Times wrote about UNYYC and its current home at Bennigan's in Times Square, "fans of theater and fans of 'Oh, Baby' back ribs will both find something to dig into."
