Synopsis

Is Takako an old maid or an academic feminist? Is Nakako just a bored housewife or a woman in love? Is Wakako, the youngest, forever a doomed slacker? One of the most prominent and beloved woman playwrights in Japan today, Ai Nagai, takes a spin on Chekhov's classic The Three Sisters by setting it in contemporary Japan. Written in 2000 and awarded the Yomiuri Literature Award for Best Play, The Three Hagi Sisters takes a cynical and comic look at the feminist attitude towards subconscious assumptions that underlie the foundations of contemporary society.
