When an explosion at the local mill takes the lives of several of the town's men, Marlene, one of the widows, refuses to grieve in the conventional, quiet mode thought proper for 1978. Mill Fire masterfully weaves the past and present to create a collage of time and sensation. It delves into the shifting nature of grief, from unforgiving anger to a tentative, hopeful, embrace of life.
