Synopsis

The Richmond, VA quartet ILAD formed in the winter of 2004, and quickly came to prominence for its adventurous performances and indefinable sound amongst local fans. Two parts compositional mind (guitarist, Clifton McDaniel and keyboardist/electronicist, Gabe Churray studied composition together in college) and two parts improvisational spirit (bassist, Cameron Ralston and drummer, Scott Clark have become one of the most sought-after rhythm sections in Richmond), ILAD's greatest strength is the ability to walk the tight rope between control and abandon, electronic and organic, all the while juggling their vast influences into the creation of good old-fashioned songs. Coalescing the experimental verve with the more focused song-writing and groove-based styling of their first two albums, plus an expanded sound palette, including more piano and guitars, samples, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, Casio keyboards, accordion, clarinet, wood flutes, didgeridoo, banjo, throat-singing, glockenspiel, various shakers, chimes, small wooden and metal percussion, vibraphone and more, Here//There, ILAD's third album, showcases a band maturing into its own as a unique and uncompromising voice on the music scene at large.

Born to musicians in Southern California, Grace McLean showed early interest in jazz voice and studied under Carmen Bradford, protege to Ella Fitzgerald, in Los Angeles and later with singer Melba Joyce, Carmen's mother, in New York. Grace earned her BFA in Drama from New York University and has since collaborated with country singer Mary McBride, bluegrass band The Jones Street Boys, singer/pianist/composer Gabriel Kahane, and composer/director/author/theatrical giant Elizabeth Swados. She learned to play the tenor saxophone in her youth, but as this proved an unsuitable instrument to accompany a singer, Grace turned to piano. Having no formal training, she has developed a sparse, plunky style that underlines her often irreverent, always truthful lyrics and highlights the main instrument: her soulfully honest voice.
