Synopsis

joes & co. is proud to present III as part of the 11th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC. Playwright and director Joe Salvatore tells the true story of an all-male ménage-a-trois set in the first half of the twentieth century and based on the real lives of George Platt Lynes, Glenway Wescott, and Monroe Wheeler. Never an even split, always emotionally charged.

III explores the fifteen-year relationship between the photographer George Platt Lynes, and one of the great artistic couples of the twentieth century: the writer Glenway Wescott, and the MoMA curator and publisher, Monroe Wheeler. Wescott and Wheeler lived together as partners for over sixty years, but included others in their relationship throughout that time. George Platt Lynes was one of the longest and most significant of those additions.

The script was researched and constructed using the letters, journals, and photographs of these three men as a way to explore how they made this complex relationship "work" for fifteen years.  Because the men often kept carbon copies of their own letter writing and saved the letters that they received from one another, it was possible to trace the correspondence among the three.
