Read what our TM Insiders had to say about Happiness!
In a short season of revivals and depressing/overly thoughtful dramas - we have a way to rise above, both musically and spiritually. The premise of the show insists that humanity take stock of where theyve been - yet seek out that happiest spot. Weve forgotten to remind ourselves of that, and everybody Ive asked since responded positively taking stock of their happy memories. Hunter, as always, is a dream - in charge of dreams. Happiness was a joy to behold. What is wrong with some cliche. Is it a cliche to watch an uplifting, compassionate, inspiring piece. I think not. My husband and I left the theater smiling from ear to ear and plan to see it again with our two college age daughters. Bravo Susan Strohman and the entire company of "Happiness"
I cant agree with you here, Theatermania. Considering its pedigree director, writers, lyricist, etc. "Happiness" is ultimately a disappointment. It panders to the worst type of cheap sentiment, and is loaded with cliche. If you cant figure out whats going on within minutes of that train being stopped, then youre an idiot. All of the music seems to be set towards the top of everyones vocal range, forcing most of the cast to shriek. Hunter Foster tries his best actually, he tries just a little too hard, to make things work, as does the rest of the cast, but this show is a major disappointment. The set, which is constantly in motion, is the one standout here, which is sad commentary.
