Synopsis

A Shelter In Our Car is the story of a young girl (Zettie) and her mother, who move from Jamaica to the United States after her father dies. With Papa gone, and Mama going to school, Mama can't find a steady job that will sustain her and Zettie, and so the two are forced to live in their car. It is hard on Zettie, especially when she is teased by the big boys in school, or when she has to wash up before school in the park. But Mama's unwavering support and love give Zettie the determination to overcome these challenges. This book received Honorable Mention in the 2004 Myers Outstanding Book Awards and the 2005 Skipping Stones Honor Award.

Appropriate for ages 4-12.
