Old Globe Announces 70th Anniversary Season

By: Adam Klasfeld · Dec 6, 2004  · New York

Artistic director Jack O'Brien and executive director Louis Spisto have announced the 70th anniversary season of The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, including a revival of last summer's acclaimed Shakespeare Festival under the aegis of internationally acclaimed director Darko Tresnjak, Ron Hutchinson's comedy Moonlight and Magnolias, and the world premiere of David Rambo's The Lady with All the Answers.

The season will begin with an open house event on June 18, 2005, including short presentations, Elizabethan treats, and family activities. Then there will be an August 25 celebration of founding artistic director Craig Noel's 90th birthday. The Shakespeare Festival will include three plays that were featured in the Globe's inaugural season in 1935 as part of the California Exposition: The Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, and The Winter's Tale. They will run in nightly rotation at the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre from June 19 through October 2.

The first of the season's world premieres, Moonlight and Magnolias, will play at the Old Globe from July 16 through August 14, 2005. The comedy takes audiences to 1939 Hollywood, where movie mogul David O. Selznick has shut down production on his epic Gone With The Wind and locked himself in his office with screenwriter Ben Hecht and director Victor Fleming. Next up, David Rambo's The Lady with All the Answers will be presented on the Cassius Carter Centre Stage from August 6 through September 11. The play follows advice columnist Ann Landers, who, after consoling lovelorn teens and confused couples, must learn how to deal with her own heartbreak.
