 | | Joe Calarco | Joe Calarco will now direct the musical The Burnt Part Boys, to be co-produced by the Vineyard Theatre and Playwrights Horizons at the latter venue in Spring 2010. He replaces the previously announced Erica Schmidt, whom a press statement says "is not continuing with the production by mutual agreement."
The show features a book by Mariana Elder with lyrics by Nathan Tysen and music by Chris Miller. Set in West Virginia in 1962, the musical follows a group of teenagers whose fathers were killed ten years earlier in a tragic coal mining accident. Casting will be announced at a later date.
Calarco is the adaptor/director of Shakespeare's R&J, and previously worked with Miller and Tysen directing their Drama Desk-nominated song cycle Fugitive Songs. Additional New York directorial credits include Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky, Boy, and Bury the Dead.
