The Old Globe Theatre will produce the West Coast premiere of Avenue Q at the historic Spreckels Theatre in San Diego. The production is scheduled to run June 30 through August 5, 2007 and to open officially on July 11.

Winner of the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical, Avenue Q is an adult take-off on the popular children's television show Sesame Street. It tells the story of twentysomething people and puppets trying to find happiness and purpose in New York City. The show has music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and a book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Lopez and Marx. The Old Globe production will be directed by Jason Moore, who received a Tony nomination for his direction of the Broadway production.

In addition to the show's Best Musical Tony, Lopez and Marx were awarded for their score and Witty for his book. Avenue Q also won the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical. Following its Tony triumphs, the show did not embark on a national tour, instead opening for an exclusive run in Las Vegas at the Wynn Hotel. That production ran for only nine months, shuttering on May 28 of this year. Although this freed the property to tour, no definite plans for such a tour have been announced as of yet.
