(White House Photo © Eric Draper) | West 50th Street productions will present Dear George: Letters to the President at 45 Bleecker Street for two performances just pior to the 2004 Presidential election -- October 31 and November 1 at 7pm -- as a benefit for The Actors' Fund of America. The show dramatizes excerpts from more than 1,500 open letters written to President Bush between Memorial and Labor Day. John Znidarsic directs a cast that includes guest appearances by Rue McClanahan, Tina Louise, Rex Reed, Rachel York, and Margo Martindale.
Billed as a bi-partisan piece, Dear George covers a wide range of opinions on issues ranging from Iraq, terrorism, 9/11, the economy, and gay marriage. Letters were submitted through the website www.DearGeorgeLetters.com and came from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Americans overseas.
"The response has been incredible, both in terms of the number of letters we received and the number of theaters producing the finished play," said Dear George creator Marcus Woollen. "If one performed the letters unedited, the play would last for something like three and a half days. With theater companies from Alaska to Wyoming signed up to produce Dear George, it's a clear sign that our country's interest in this year's Presidential race is extraordinarily high."
All tickets for the show are priced at $45; they can be purchased by calling TheaterMania at 212-352-3101.
