John Cullum, Howard McGillin, Kate Baldwin, Crista Moore, Nancy Opel, and Ann Crumb will headline the Bard SummerScape concert presentation of the John LaTouche-Jerome Moross musical The Golden Apple on Sunday, August 28.

The concert will feature the American Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jonathan Tunick. The cast will also include Cheryl Stern, Daniel Marcus, David Staller, Brandon Victor Dixon, David Hess, Ken Jennings, Drew McVety, and Sinclair Mitchell.

An updated version of Homer's Iliad and The Odyssey, The Golden Apple takes place in a small town in Washington at the end of the Spanish-American War. The show's 1954 Broadway production, which starred Stephen Douglass and Kaye Ballard, ran just four months. It is best remembered for the song "Lazy Afternoon," which has been recorded by many singers, after being introudced in the show by Ballard. It was also the title song of one of Barbra Streisand's albums.

Cullum, who will play Hector, is a two-time Tony Award winner for Shenandoah and On the Twentieth Century. McGillin, who will play Ulysses, received Tony nominations for Anything Goes and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Baldwin, one of the hottest young theater actresses, will play Helen. She was seen recently in Wonderful Town and Opening Doors, and stars next month in Bush Is Bad.

Moore, who will play Penelope, starred on Broadway in Big and Gypsy, both of which earned her Tony Award nominations. Opel, who will play Mars, was a Tony nominee for Urinetown, and can currently be seen as Yente in Fiddler on the Roof. Crumb will play Juniper. Her Broadway credits include Aspects of Love, Chess, and Anna Karenina, which earned her a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.

Girl Crazy
City Center Encores! production of the classic George and Ira Gershwin is pleasingly zany, but lacks a little heart.
