The line-up for the fifth annual soloNOVA Arts Festival has been announced. Eight solo artists will be presented June 18-July 2, at P.S. 122.
The festival will open with Kim Wayans in the New York premiere of A Handsome Woman Retreats (...a seriously funny journey to inner peace) (June 18-23).
Iona Morris directs this piece about an unhappy woman suffering from panic attacks who attends a ten-day silent meditation retreat to root out the source of her anxiety. Along the way, the writer/performer introduces many of the unique characters whose influences contributed to the Wayans family becoming one of the most successful families in entertainment today.
Additional performances will include The Last Laugh (June 18-23), written and performed by Eric Lockley, and directed by Jonathan McCrory, about two black performers who begin to confuse performance and reality; Hamlet (solo) (June 19-25), performed by Raoul Bhaneja and directed by Robert Ross Parker which distills Shakespeare's play down to the essence of live theatre: The Audience, The Actor and The Text; a journey through elderly sexuality in youth obsessed America entitled (What I Know About) My Parents' Sex Life (June 19-25), written and performed by Christen Clifford and developed by Daniel Fish; Prometheus Bound (June 26-30), written and performed by Aravind Enrique Adyanthaya, a show of languages, body and machine; a surreal and voyeuristic techno-tragedy, Sally M.I.A. (June 26-30), written and performed by Krista DeNio, and directed by Ashley Hughes; Tongue-in Paint (June 2-July 2), written and performed by Moana Niumeitolu, in which a palette of 13 assorted characters are interwoven with song, food, dance, poetry and painting; and Take Heart (June 27-July 2), written and performed by Julia May Jonas, directed by Jess Barbagallo, which recounts a humorous and disturbing tale of a child liar and her inevitable downfall.
