Out in Public

Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, Zach Braff, Marcia Gay Harden, Allison Janney, Debra Messing, Idina Menzel, et al. turn out for this year's Public Theater gala.

By: Joseph Marzullo; text by Brian Scott Lipton · Jun 20, 2007  · New York

On June 19, The Public Theater held its annual summer gala at the Delacorte Theater before a performance of Romeo & Juliet, and the stars came out in full force to support the beloved institution. Here's Alan Alda, last seen treading the boards in the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross.

Also on hand for the festivities were the fabulous Candice Bergen, who has signed up to star in a film remake of The Women, and her lovely daughter, Chloe Malle...

...Scrubs star Zach Braff, who appeared in Twelfth Night at the Delacorte a few seasons back....

...the talented Josh Hamilton, looking well rested a month after closing in The Coast of Utopia and all set to do a free reading of the new play Wirehead at Ars Nova on Monday night...

...and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, who was part of the star-studded cast of The Seagull at the Delacorte.

Here's a quartet of Emmy Award winners: Allison Janney, who's soon to be seen on the big screen in Hairspray and on stage in the Williamstown Theatre Festival production of Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden...

...Kristen Johnston, who starred in both Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night at the Delacorte...

...Swoosie Kurtz, who will return to series television this fall in the highly anticipated Pushing Daisies with Kristin Chenoweth and Lee Pace...

...and Debra Messing, whose USA miniseries The Starter Wife has climbed to the top of the cable ratings chart.

Among the other members of the Public's extended family on hand were Two Gentleman of Verona star Norm Lewis, who heads to Denver next month for the pre-Broadway tryout of The Little Mermaid...

...and Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, who burned down the house in Michael John LaChiusa's See What I Wanna See.

Legally Blonde' s exuberant director-choreographer, Jerry Mitchell, is a welcome addition to any celebration...

...as is the vivacious Daphne Rubin-Vega, who starred earlier this year at the Public in the LAByrinth Theatre Company's production of Jack Goes Boating.

Last but never least: Award-winning director Mike Nichols, who helmed The Seagull in the park, starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline...

...and his equally remarkable wife, ABC newswoman Diane Sawyer.

Girl Crazy
City Center Encores! production of the classic George and Ira Gershwin is pleasingly zany, but lacks a little heart.
