(© Joseph Marzullo/Retna) | Carly Smithson was eliminated on FOX-TV's American Idol on April 23 after singing Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" the previous evening.
The April 22 episode included a live appearance by the famed Broadway composer, as the remaining contestant sang the following songs from Webber's work: David Archuleta ("Think of Me"), Jason Castro ("Memory"), David Cook ("Music of the Night"), Syesha Mercado ("One Rock n' Roll Too Many"), and Brooke White ("You Must Love Me"). The April 23 episode also showed filmed visits to former Idol contestants turned Broadway stars Clay Aiken and Tamyra Gray.
Lloyd Webber received Tony Awards for Best Score for Evita, Cats, and Sunset Boulevard, and received nominations for Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Song and Dance, Starlight Express, Aspects of Love, and The Woman in White. In addition, he has won numerous British awards for these shows as well as The Beautiful Game and Tell Me on a Sunday.
