Anna Moench, Christopher Oscar Peña Named 2012 Van Lier Playwriting Fellows

Lark Play Development Center has named Anna Moench and Christopher Oscar Peña its 2012 Van Lier Playwriting Fellows.

The Van Lier Fellowship Program annually supports two promising young artists in making the leap from training to a professional career in the theater. During their time in the program, Moench and Peña will work with program director Lloyd Suh and artistic director John Clinton Eisner on multiple artistic projects. The Fellowship also includes an award of $8,000 and access to Lark’s office and rehearsal space.

Moench’s plays include Hunger, In Quietness, Great Eastern, and The Pillow Book. She has developed plays with organizations such as The Public Theater, The Lark, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, where she was named a Tennessee Williams Scholar. Awards include the Jerome Foundation’s 2009 Travel Grant and the 2010 T.S. Eliot Exchange with the Old Vic.

Peña’s plays include maelstrom, l(y)re, icarus burns, and the suicide tapes. His work has been developed or seen at the Public Theater, the Ontological Hysteric Incubator, Rising Circle, The Flea Theater and the New York Theatre Workshop. He has been a visiting fellow at the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, the Sewanee Writers Conference in Tennessee, and most recently his play maelstrom was awarded the Latino Playwrights award from the Kennedy Center (ACTF) in Washington, D.C.
