Denzel Washington to Speak, Receive Honorary Degree at University of Pennsylvania Commencement

Tony Award and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, will deliver the address at the University of Pennsylvania’s 255th Commencement on Monday, May 16. He will also receive an honorary doctor of arts degree.

Author Joyce Carol Oates, Nobel Prize winner Ei-ichi Negishi, entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim, professor Renee C. Fox, and New York Times columnist Nicolas D. Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, will also receive honorary degrees.


Washington won the Tony Award for Fences and also starred on Broadway in Julius Caesar. He won Academy Awards for his work in Glory and Training Day, and was nominated for his work in Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, and The Hurricane.
