Award-winning playwright Christopher Hampton has been signed to write a new feature film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, according to Variety. The film will be directed by Tom Hooper, who helmed HBO’s acclaimed miniseries John Adams.

Hampton is best known for the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and an Oscar for the screenplay for the film version, Dangerous Liaisons. He was recently represented on Broadway by his translation for The Seagull and the Roundabout Theatre Company will revive his play The Philanthropist later this season.

His many other film credits include Carrington, Total Eclipse, Imagining Argentina, and Atonement.
