Tim Burton' s film version of Sweeney Todd, the Tony Award-winning Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical, remained the ninth most popular film this week, and now has a total gross of $38.5 million, according to Variety. The film, which features a screenplay by John Logan, is currently playing on nearly 1,250 screens.

Sweeney Todd stars Johnny Depp in the title role, Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, and Sacha Baron Cohen as Pirelli. The cast also includes Timothy Spall, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jayne Wisener, Edward Sanders, and Laura Michelle Kelley. The film has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, including Best Film, Comedy or Musical, Best Actor and Actress, Comedy or Musical, for Depp and Bonham Carter and Best Director for Burton.

In related news, the film has been listed in nine categories, including Best Actor and Actress, for the longlist of the BAFTA Awards, the British equivalent of the Academy Award. The longlist, which includes 15 contenders in each category, will be narrowed down to five nominees, to be announced on January 16. The film is on the longlist for adapted screenplay, makeup and hair, special visual effects, sound, costume design, production design, and music.
