A Public Event

Eartha Kitt, Rosie Perez, and other stars party after appearing in The Public Sings: A 50th Anniversary Celebration at City Center.

By: Joseph Marzullo; text by Michael Portantiere · Jan 31, 2006  · New York

New York City Center was aglow last night as a host of stars gathered for The Public Sings: A 50th Anniversary Celebration, featuring songs from the many musicals that have been presented by The Public Theater over the decades. Among the performers were Meryl Streep, Mike Nichols, Betty Buckley, Donna Murphy, Marc Kudisch, George C. Wolfe, Chuck Cooper, Norm Lewis, Elaine Stritch, and a host of others pictured below at the after-party, which was held at the Time Warner Center.

Seen here in an affectionate moment together are Eartha Kitt, who starred in the Public Theater's Broadway production of Michael John LaChiusa's The Wild Party, and Rosie Perez, one of several participants in the concert who proved that they couldn't "Sing" by tackling that number from the epoch-making Marvin Hamlisch-Edward Kleban-Nicholas Dante-James Kirkwood-Michael Bennett musical A Chorus Line.
