Two sweet-toothed siblings, one witchy woman, and endless musical delights - Find it all in Hansel and Gretel, a most enchanting opera based on the evergreen fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. City Opera's production updates the story to turn-of-the-century New York City, where a Lower East Side tenement replaces Hansel and Gretel's woodsy cottage; snow-covered Central Park is where the children lose their way; and an opulent Fifth Avenue mansion is home to the witch. With New York City as the backdrop, this fairy tale's themes about children, their fears, and their infinite imagination are all the more immediate. Hansel and Gretel features the folksy "Susie, Little Susie," the hair-raising "Witches' Ride," and the transcendent "Evening Prayer."
