Harbor Lights Theater Company Adds The Bikinis to Its Summer Season

Staten Island's Harbor Lights Theater Company will produce The Bikinis this summer in coproduction with Ray Roderick and James Hindman of Miracle or 2 Productions. Performances will run from August 7-17 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Gardens.

Roderick returns to Harbor Lights after having directed past productions of The Music Man and Oliver! "Producing this show takes us to the next level in realizing our vision as a premier regional theater company," says Harbor Lights Executive Artistic Director Tamara Jenkins. "This is the first time we have been able to branch out into the third objective for Harbor Lights, which is the co-production and origination of new works."

The Bikinis features popular songs from the 1960s and '70s including "It's in His Kiss," "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," "Heat Wave," "Under the Boardwalk," "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Incense and Peppermints," "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma," "When Will I Be Loved," "I'm Every Woman," "I Will Survive," and "It's Raining Men." The story centers on a group of inseparable girlfriends who came to be known as "The Bikinis" after winning a talent contest in Belmar Beach, New Jersey. The Harbor Lights production features Karyn Quackenbush (Bronx Bombers), Lori Hammel (Mamma Mia!), Jennifer Allen (The Bridges of Madison County), and Regina LeVert.

"I am happy to bring a show to Staten Island this summer that is completely fun for all audiences," said Roderick. "My wife spent many a summer day at the shore so I know this show has the ability to bring back some wonderful memories for so many people."

Harbor Lights will also offer scholarships to minority youth for its summer intensive program running from August 11-22 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Gardens. The program offers pre-professional theater training for students ages 11-18. The scholarship support being provided to minority youth includes participation in the Summer Intensive for Youth, fall and spring acting classes, master classes offered throughout the year, and personal mentoring and career guidance. Recommendations are accepted and auditions are required.
