WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Irish Arts Center commemorates the Belfast opening of their exhibition Fighting Irishmen: A Celebration of the Celtic Warrior at the Ulster American Folk Park with a special night of films in New York. First, the BBC special on the exhibition, curated by James J. Houlihan, which tells the story of Irish immigration to America through the sport of boxing. Followed by An Troid Fhuilteach (A Bloody Canvas) (2007), Andrew Gallimore's account of the 1923 boxing world championship fight in Dublin, in which a Senegalese heavyweight champion and a journeyman boxer from Clare met in the ring. Set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War, the fight was a sensation attracting the attention of the world's sporting press. But the story behind it, and its impact on the newly formed Irish Free State, is more fascinating still. Revisit this unknown chapter in Irish history, and the excitement and political turmoil that underscored it.
