WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Barbara Carroll, the jazz pianist and singer whose cool, sophisticated performances have made her a New York institution, has established a new home at the Oak Room of The Algonquin. Accompanied by Jay Leonhart on bass, Ms. Carroll will pay tribute to her personal friend and colleague, the legendary songwriter Harold Arlen. The year 2005 marks the centennial celebration of the composer of the classic film songs from The Wizard of Oz and A Star Is Born, among many others, and standards such as "Over The Rainbow," "Stormy Weather," and "Get Happy."

The engagment celebrates Ms. Carroll's new CD to be released December 14 by Harbinger Records, Barbara at Birdland, which was recorded during her extended run at the fabled jazz club last summer. The disc captures her subtle and sensitive performance in her trademark progressive and lyrical style. Featuring Mr. Leonhart on bass and Joe Cocuzzo on drums, the CD includes standards such as Harold Arlen's "Don't Like Goodbyes," Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," Bart Howard's "Fly Me To The Moon," and Stephen Sondheim's "Old Friends."
