Lorrie Morgan to Join Joe Nichols in Broadway's Pure Country

By Brian Scott Lipton • Aug 4, 2009 • New York

Lorrie Morgan will play Lula opposite Country music star Joe Nichols as Rusty in Pure Country. The new musical is co-written by Peter Masterston, Steve Dorff, John Bettis, and Rex McGee, and is aiming to open on Broadway at a theater to be determined in early 2010. The musical will be directed by Masterston.

The show, which is based on the 1992 film of the same name, focuses on Rusty, a country music superstar at the height of his career who walks out of an overblown concert tour and goes on a journey to find himself -- and the love he left behind.

The creative team will feature Derek McLane (sets), Ann Roth (costumes), Kevin Adams (lighting), Acme Sound Partners (sound), and Eugene Gwozdz (music direction). Masterston is best known as the co-author and co-director of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He also directed the film versions of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful and Lily Dale.

Dorff is a Grammy- and Emmy-nominated songwriter, whose work includes "Through the Years" and "I Just Fall in Love Again"; Betis is also a Grammy- and Emmy-nominated songwriter, whose work includes "One Moment in Time," "Human Nature," and "Top of the World." McGee wrote the screenplay for Pure Country as well as the films Tiny Revolution and Whistling Dixie.

Morgan has recorded more than 15 studio albums, and has had three number 1 singles on Billboard's Country music charts. Her newest release, the upcoming A Moment in Time, is expected to hit stores in October. Nichols has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and has won numerous others. He recently released the single "Believers" and his last CD Real Things was released in 2007.
