The movie Mamma Mia! became the U.K.'s highest-grossing movie ever last year, with 69 million pounds ($113 million) in ticket sales according to Bloomberg.com citing a report from the U.K. Film Council. In doing so, the movie musical surpassed the box office take of the 1997 film, Titanic.

Other movies with U.K. producers, directors, writers, and/or cast and crew last year included The Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace, and in total films from the U.K. grabbed a 14.9 percent share of global box-office takings, up from 12.4 percent in 2007, the Film Council said at a presentation of its statistical yearbook in London.
