The award recognizes "outstanding achievement in commercial theatre producing," and is named after the late producer Robert Whitehead, who died in 2002.
Thompson is currently represented on Broadway by A View from the Bridge and God of Carnage, and he is one of the producers of the upcoming Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor.
Among the luminaries in attendance were Tony Award winner Zoe Caldwell, the widow of Robert Whitehead, A View from the Bridge stars Liev Schreiber and Jessica Hecht, and God of Carnage stars Lucy Liu, Jeff Daniels, and Dylan Baker.
