When I was eight years old, my sister and I could recite every lyric to Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods; let's just say my family loves musical theater. My father is a pianist, my mother and brother are the greatest chefs I know, and my sister is an opera singer. So where does that leave me? I have always had an interest in theater, but when I performed in my first musical at the age of 11, that was when my interest transformed into a passion. Through middle school and high school I completely immersed myself in the drama program. I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to perform, produce, design, and direct at my high school. The drama club and thespian troupe had a major impact on my life, and the memories formed during that time are very special. Although performing is and always will be a passion of mine, when it came down to deciding on a career path, I knew performing was not the route I wanted to take. I have the deepest respect for anyone who has the talent and wishes to pursue performing as a career. However, I knew that I desired a certain level of career and financial stability in my life that a performance career would make it difficult to achieve. Upon the realization that I was going to have to choose a major that wasn't theater, I immediately panicked. Throughout my last year of high school I spoke to my parents and mentors for advice, and after much consideration, I decided to have an undeclared major my first year at Hofstra. As a student with an undeclared major, I had the ability to take a variety of different courses in multiple subject areas. This opportunity allowed me to find a major where the creative skills that I had developed through my H.S. drama program could be utilized. That was when I discovered my interest in marketing. Over the course of the last three years I have been able to apply the organization, communication, and creativity skills I've learned through theater to not only my marketing classes but also all of my marketing and public relations extracurricular activities. Hofstra University has allowed me to discover a new passion yet still hold on to my dedication to the arts. A marketing career in the arts may be the perfect fit for me. While I may not be a theater major, my passion and knowledge of the performing arts has helped mold me into the individual that I am today, and I will always incorporate theater into my life.
