Ryan Zatcoff, TMU contributor and senior at Hofstra University
One of the most important words of advice I can offer any future or current college student is to get involved. If you completely immerse yourself in your chosen field, you are guaranteed to not only enjoy college, but also to create life-long memories. As a marketing major and drama minor at Hofstra, I have been able to combine both of my passions in almost all of my extracurricular activities.
The Department of Drama & Dance has accepted me with open arms since my first-year at Hofstra even though I am not a major. Every semester the department holds auditions for the upcoming productions, and all Hofstra students are welcome to audition. Since the department follows this policy, I have been given the opportunity to perform in two department productions in the last four years: On The Town and Cabaret. These experiences allowed me to fulfill my passion for performing as well as meet and learn from all of the drama majors. Through being involved in these department productions I met some of my closest friends and was given the opportunity to work with talented and successful theater professionals.
Most recently, I was chosen to join the Public Relations Team with six other Hofstra students to promote the department and all of their productions. Through this involvement, I have been able to use the marketing skills I have learned at Hofstra and through my internships and actually apply them! As a team, we have created social media accounts, designed posters and logos, promoted the current productions through events on campus, and created promotional tactics for all department productions. Although this commitment is time consuming, being able to work with six other students who all have a passion for PR and the Department of Drama & Dance has been incredible.
Another way that I have been able to stay involved with theater on campus is through a theater company called Masquerade Musical Theater Co. Through Masquerade, students are able to propose shows to direct and assemble a creative team and cast which consists of only students! Masquerade has allowed me to get involved with performing and directing. I was Paul in Company two years ago and, most recently, directed The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Hofstra offers this opportunity for students to get involved and I am unbelievably thankful that I have been given the chance to work with this club.
***Promotional Plug (What do you expect? I'm a marketing major!): Find the Department of Drama & Dance on Facebook, Twitter (@HUDramaDance), & Tumblr! Also, follow Masquerade on Twitter (@MasqueradeMT)! Thank you!
Of course, being involved on campus can be overwhelming at times. However, through these commitments I have met some extremely talented people and have had the opportunity to perform, direct, and infuse my marketing and public relations knowledge into what I love. If you become involved on campus, you are guaranteed to have an unforgettable college experience.
