WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Frank Loesser's first Broadway score, immediately demonstrated the master's easy command of wit and romance, sophistication and high jinks. George Abbott's adaptation of Brandon Thomas' classic college farce Charley's Aunt delivered "Once in Love With Amy," "My Darling, My Darling" and "The New Ashmolean Marching Society" to the hit parade, and launched Loesser into the songwriting stratosphere. The musical opened at the St. James Theater on October 11, 1948, and played 792 performances. It was directed by George Abbott, choreographed by George Balanchine and starred Ray Bolger, who won a Tony Award for his performance.

Where's Charley will be directed by John Doyle.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

The charming 1948 musical Where's Charley? proves to be an ideal choice for the City Center Encores! series -- particularly when it is as winsomely acted and beautifully sung as it is in John Doyle's smartly staged production.

This first Broadway work from Frank Loesser -- the man who would go on to write such hits as Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying -- is often gorgeous if imperfect:, and George Abbott's book, based on Brandon Thomas' farce Charley's Aunt, is curiously disjointed, especially in the second act . So one can see why Where's Charley? is hardly a candidate for a major revival -- and these sorts of shows are Encores! true mission..

RE:A charming and tuneful "Charley"
While it was not well reviewed origianally, it was a big hit and became a successful film as well. The book was never very good but the score is charming and filled with excellent songs. First rate singing and dancing and very well staged, and its a joy to hear the score with the original orchestrations which are wonderful. All in all ,a real treat.
