WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
According to Dinitia Smith of the New York Times, Two Gents is "… lightening caught in a bottle, done in a flash, a boisterous, anachronistic, multiethnic, musical version of Shakespeare's Two Gentleman of Verona." Composer Galt MacDermot focused on creating music that drew from reggae, calypso, and Latin influences. One of the Bard's earliest plays, the 1971 original musical evolved into a multiracial love story in which old Verona became, in the creators' minds, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Shakespeare's Milan was New York. As adapted by John Guare and Mel Shapiro, the text was sprinkled with slang and Spanish phrases, which added to the improvisational feel of the original production.
