Antony Sher stars in the National Theatre's production of Travelling Light, a new play by Nicholas Wright.

The play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood's golden age. Nicholas Hytner directs.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Nicholas Wright's new play for the National Theatre,
Travelling Light, is a fable-like celebration of the early days of film-making which, while intermittently entertaining, is lacking in dramatic tension.

Wright shows how the movie industry has its roots in the shtetls of Eastern Europe and how its earliest stories sprang from Jewish culture. Told in flashback from 1930s Hollywood, Motl Mendl (Damien Molony), a famous movie director -- who now goes by the far more American name of Maurice Montgomery -- reflects on his younger days, learning his craft on his father's cinematograph as the new century dawns.
