In John Webster's Jacobean tragedy The White Devil, the unfaithful Vittoria Corombona rises above herself and shows strength, courage, and conscience during her trial. Director Philip Franks (The Heiress at the National) sets the play in the decadent and disintegrating Rome of the 1960's.
