WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Following the success of last season's Brief Encounter (now on Broadway at Studio 54), Kneehigh returns to St. Ann's Warehouse with their seminal production of The Red Shoes, directed by Emma Rice and based on Hans Christian Andersen's enduring folk tale. The Red Shoes is about a girl who cannot resist her red shoes; they make her dance with delight, spin with possibilities. But what happens when temptation becomes obsession? When she can't stop dancing? When she can't take them off? Surreal and sensuous, quirky and profound, bloody and bare - Kneehigh has created a fun and menacing cabaret -- with muscular dancing, characteristic hi-jinks, and haunting overtones.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Before the start of director Emma Rice's darkly enthralling and decidedly adult-oriented adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Red Shoes, being presented by her Kneehigh Theatre Company at St. Ann's Warehouse, one encounters cast members in the theater lobby -- but they are far from the jolly souls audience members found in the same space prior to Rice's adaptation of Noel Coward's Brief Encounter last season (and which can now be found at Broadway's Studio 54).

No, these folks are barefooted, skinny, their eye sockets turned sinister by kohl, clad in underwear, and carrying brown valises. It's as if they're all haunted, forced to carry the truths by which we all li[...]

Red Shoes
Burlesque meets grotesque. I am sure, artistically, it is valid to interpret any work in any way the producer feels relevant but for my taste this was too much burlesque which hid the main these of the story behind too many off the wall contrivances, many of which seemed to be rehashes of what has been done before in other productions. The staging and acting were good and there were good moments but for me, it was a much too stylized and over the top production which left one wondering what the story really meant or if it was just being used as a vehicle for what amounted to a burlesque show. Certainly dont bring the children!!!

RE:Mesmerizing
A beautiful, grotesque and brilliant nightmare that will haunt long after one has left the theatre. Not for the wee ones, but for everyone else there are physical tricks and theatrical treats in this production that are not be missed.
