WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The New York Pops celebrate the music of George Gershwin with conductor Stuart Malina and guest artist Maureen McGovern. The first half of the program includes Malina at the piano, performing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." Other selections include "American in Paris" and the Girl Crazy Overture. In the second half of the program, Maureen McGovern sings classics from the Gershwin songbook. Stuart Malina is one of America's most versatile and accomplished conductors. He helped create Movin' Out with director/choreographer Twyla Tharp, for which he won a Tony Award for Orchestration with Billy Joel in 2003. He has conducted numerous orchestras across the country, including the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Louisville Orchestra. Maureen McGovern, a two-time Grammy nominee, has a career that spans 35 years and includes recordings, concerts, Broadway, theater, film, television, radio, and composing. Ms. McGovern made her debut with The New York Pops in 1991. This performance marks her fifteenth appearance with the orchestra, including the recording With a Song in My Heart: The Great Songs of Richard Rodgers. The New York Pops was founded by Skitch Henderson in 1983 and is now the largest independent symphonic pops orchestra in the United States.
