WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Scenes and Songs from 'Fannie Lou' is a staged reading of selected dialogue and songs from the upcoming original musical "Fannie Lou," inspired by and honoring the life of voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer.
With a compelling script and a riveting score, "Scenes and Songs from 'Fannie Lou'" introduces the audience to Mrs. Hamer and her struggle to gain voting rights in rural Mississippi in the early 1960's. The production reveals Mrs. Hamer's determination and steadfast resolve, her influence on people around her, and their influence on her.
Nine scenes and 10 songs from the full musical are highlighted in this production. The music is a powerful array of ballads, mid-tempo songs and uptempo selections in pop, jazz, blues, light opera and traditional musical theater styles.
"Scenes and Songs from 'Fannie Lou'" features book, music and lyrics by Felicia Hunter, and the production is stage managed by award-winning technical expert Rich Abrams.
The talented cast of 17 ensemble players includes experienced performers and some of New York's most gifted up-and-coming actors and singers.
