WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Feinstein's at the Regency presents the debut appearance of Rip Crystal for one night only on Monday, February 21. His Musical Director is the Grammy Award nominated jazz pianist, Mike Melvoin, who will be joined by Steve Gilmore on bass. The show, "When Jazz Was Pop," will feature a number of the popular jazz tunes of the 30's and 40's he heard and loved as a kid growing up on Long Island, including "Since I Fell For You," "She's Funny That Way" and "Tea For Two," as well as tributes to Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Richard "Rip" Crystal was born into a show business family. His brother is the multi-talented Billy Crystal, currently starring on Broadway in 700 Sundays. His father, Jack, produced jazz concerts and managed the legendary Commodore Music Shop in Manhattan. His mother, Helen, was an amateur actress and encouraged her three sons to perform in school plays. Helen's older brother, Milt Gabler, was an important influence throughout his life. His Uncle Milt created the Commodore Music Shop, the Commodore Jazz Label and then went on to a legendary producing career at Decca Records. He is considered to be one of the most prolific and important music producers of popular music during the 20th century.
