WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
"I have given myself to a possibility of love with you! But you have turned me into this, you have reduced me, Penelope... to a fat man in Speedos." It's 11.30am and already it's 92 degrees. At the bottom of a drained swimming pool, four ridiculous men face their inevitable deaths, and play for an unwinnable love. Based on the final chapter of Homer's The Odyssey, Penelope is the newest play from Ireland's Druid Theatre Company, written by 2010 OBIE winner Enda Walsh. This American Premiere marks St. Ann's third collaboration with Druid and Enda Walsh, following the critical and popular productions of The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom at St. Ann's Warehouse.

Offbeat doesn't begin to suggest the bizarre visions of human despair Enda Walsh conjures in an age he sees as third-rate at best. But while he hit the bull's-eye with The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom, his newer work, Penelope, now at St. Ann's Warehouse, falls shorter of the mark than usual, despite the work of a first-rate cast.
Set in the modern day, but drawing inspiration from ancient times, Penelope is set in a drained pool with faded sun-baked tiles in which the suitors whom Homer introduced in The Odyssey -- macho Quinn (Karl Shiels), bald and timid Fitz (Niall Buggy), giddy and self-satisfied Dunne (Denis Conway), and painfully uncertain Burns (Tadhg Murphy) -- p[...]
