WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In an ongoing collaboration between American Opera Projects and Opera on Tap, Opera Grows in Brooklyn brings scenes from contemporary operas to the cabaret atmosphere of Galapagos. Sunday's program, selected in honor of Women's History Month, encompasses a wide range of what opera has become. Kamala Sankaram's Miranda utilizes the audience in an interactive theater experience akin to a mystery dinner (but with cocktails instead of salisbury steak). Prairie Dogs is Rachel Peters' story of a young girl who attempts to replace her real family with...taxidermic prairie dogs. The final scene on the program is from the controversial and moving 1998 opera Patience & Sarah written by Paula Kimper. Based on the novel by Isabel Miller, it tells of two nineteenth-century women who fall in love and their lifelong devotion to one another -- bringing to a close the best night of opera you're likely to see outside the Met.
