WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The readings are part of the New York Historical Society's landmark exhibition, Slavery in New York. The full Narrative, a soul-baring account of the life of a slave from the perspective of one who knew that life only too well, is being read over an eight-day cycle every two weeks. Frederick Douglass lived twenty years of his life confined to slavery, from his birth in 1818 to his escape in 1838, and nearly nine years as a fugitive slave from 1838 until 1847. During the 1840s he gained international fame as an abolitionist, and was a predecessor to future civil rights leaders. Charles Turner stars and directs.
