WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Originally created by Pina Bausch for Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1978, Kontakthof literally translates as 'place - or house - of contact'. Eleven men and eleven women come together in what might be a dancehall to play out a range of provocative games to a soundtrack of popular songs from the 1930's.
Free from narrative constraints, Kontakthof is a towering achievement, revealing the essence of Bausch's lifelong exploration into desire, human identity and the endless search for emotional attachment.
The original version of Kontakthof was first seen in London in 1982 . It was then re-created on a group of senior citizens from Wuppertal twenty years later as part of bite02.
The piece now returns in a poignant pairing with its counterpart created eight years later: the same work but performed by Teenagers.
The Kontakthof season at the Barbican is performed in memory of Pina Bausch (27 July 1940 - 30 June 2009).
