WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Part of the 2010 New Wave Festival

Choreographer Ralph Lemon (Come Home Charley Patton, 2004 Next Wave) returns to BAM with How Can You Stay in the House All Day and Not Go Anywhere?, a multimedia dance work that explores loss and transcendence. Incorporating the fruits of Lemon's collaboration with Walter Carter, a 102-year-old ex-sharecropper from the Mississippi Delta, this piece ruminates on the memories and futuristic dreams of a life fully lived. Referencing the film Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky--an artist similarly preoccupied with nostalgia and presentiment--Lemon's work brings footage of Carter's world into dialogue with a cast of dancers and actors whose turbulent movements push the boundaries of exhaustion to create a visceral treatise on what it means to be human.
