"Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Some People," "Let Me Entertain You" -- this musical has some of the most memorable show tunes ever written. But Gypsy also tells a universal story, about the powerful relationships between Mama Rose and her daughters Baby June and Louise, and vividly sets it in the backstage world of vaudeville and burlesque theatres all across America of the '20s and '30s. As we witness the transformation of the awkward Louise into Gypsy Rose Lee, we see a clear-eyed celebration of the complex impulses that drive all dreamers and wannabe performers.
