WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
My Funny Detective, Giancarlo Vulcano's second album, is the soundtrack to a film that doesn't exist. The piece was inspired by the screenplay of the same name, about a twenty-something private investigator in modern-day Los Angeles. While conjuring moods of classic film noir, the script also ruminates on the author's own struggles, providing Vulcano with a story that was at once a genre piece and also very close to his own life.
Giancarlo Vulcano is currently co-music director of the NBC comedy 30 Rock, starring Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. He was also Howard Shore's score supervisor on such films as Gangs of New York, The Departed and Lord of the Rings. The Smith Quartet premiered Vulcano's new string quartet, inspired by Joseph Cornell, at the Bloomberg Artspace in London. Along with composer Jeff Richmond and Hal Willner, Vulcano produced The Music of 30 Rock soundtrack album. Giancarlo is also the guitarist for the group Las Rubias del Norte.
My Funny Detective is: Brian Drye and Ryan Keberle (trombones), Ian Riggs (bass), Vinnie Sperrazza (drums), and Vulcano (guitar). The concert will also include the US premiere of a work for string quartet by Vulcano and a special guest appearance by Lenny Pickett (Tower of Power, Borneo Horns, Saturday Night LIve).
