WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Based on Roald Dahl's famous story the opera exudes the vibrancy of the natural world. The sinister machinations of the farmers as they do battle with a family of foxes are brilliantly evoked by librettist Donald Sturrock. The piece is written for children and adults alike, and is funny, serious, and supremely engaging. The musical language is both accessible and virtuosic. ETO has a superb cast lined up including Fiona Kimm as Agnes the Digger (an insatiable machine); Nicholas Merryweather plays the eponymous hero. Other fabulous characters include the philosophical and tipsy Rita the Rat, and the gourmand villain Mr Bunce.
