WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Dark Eyes/New Eyes is a story told through traditional and modern Armenian music. The program honors our ancestors and the new possibilities of life and art in the world today. The performance is fully integrated with live and animated images of visual artist Kevork Mourad, whose live paintings are projected onto a large screen in real time. Ten musicians offer lively and contemplative songs of village life, including work songs and humorous songs. The music will include the work of Gomidas Vartabed, who could capture the spirit of a people in a single piece of music, and the languidly beautiful melodies of 18th century troubadour/composer Sayat-Nova. The evening will include selections from Eve Beglarian's Far Off Country and improvisations on Armenian dance rhythms by John Hadfield. The brilliant oudist and composer Ara Dinkjian spins improvisations that cross the boundaries between Middle Eastern maqams and jazz. Perspectives Ensemble and Judson Arts present Dark Eyes/New Eyes featuring the performances of MAYA, a trio composed of John Hadfield, percussion/composer; Bridget Kibbey, harp; and Sato Moughalian, flute. Guest artists include Shane Shanahan (percussion), oud virtuoso and composer Ara Dinkjian, composer and vocalist Eve Beglarian, recorder and chalumeau luminary Nina Stern, and Zulal, the a cappella Armenian folk trio with singers Teni Apelian, Anaïs Alexandra Tekerian, and Yeraz Markarian. Dark Eyes/New Eyes pays homage to the journeys of our families, ancestors and departed ones, exploring the time-honored art forms through which culture is transmitted over time, as well as new incarnations of those traditions as they are regenerated today.
