WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Christmas Spells is holiday variety show starring Justin Bond that will feature Dixie Belle: The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a one-act play written by Kate Bornstein. Sexy, fun, and light-hearted, Dixie Belle is an irreverent slice of Americana set in New Orleans at the end of the Civil War that finds Mark Twain's bad-boy hero working as a tranny in a brothel on Christmas Eve. This post-modern holiday camp-fest was chosen by Hilton Als of The New Yorker as one of the top five theatrical experiences of 2009 and stars the notorious Pixie Harlots. Christmas Spells will also include new monologues, cultural observations, and original songs written by Justin Bond along with twisted takes on more traditional holiday fare. All in all Christmas Spells promises to be a glittering evening of singing, dancing, and heart-warming perversion!

A wailing figure garbed in an outrageous, oversized outfit gives birth to a disco ball in the opening moments of Christmas Spells, now at the Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Arts Center. This wildly irreverent nativity scene sets just the right tone for the gender-bending holiday spectacular that follows, which is created and performed by Justin Bond and The Pixie Harlots -- a ragtag troupe of drag artists. And while the show doesn't always come together, it is fabulously unforgettable.
There are two primary components to the evening, the first of which features Bond -- clad in a resplendent red glittery gown designed by Machine Dazzle and Todd Thomas -- performing a holiday cabaret. The[...]
